About The Hugo Burge Foundation
Hugo Burge (1972-2023) was a British entrepreneur, philanthropist, art lover, and Patron of the Borders Art Fair who spent the last ten years of his life turning his beautiful home in the Scottish Borders into a haven for makers and creators. Hugo hosted events and concerts, built workshops and studios, established artists' and writers' residencies, supported local community groups, and became an important local patron of the arts.
In just a few short years, Hugo transformed the cultural life of the Scottish Borders.
Established in 2024 the Hugo Burge Foundation exists to continue what he started and is dedicated to nourishing and inspiring creativity in every one of us.
Running courses, hosting events, offering awards and providing opportunities to those wanting to enrich their lives and surroundings with art, beauty and the magic of making, the Foundation provides affordable workspaces for artists, makers and creative professionals, and offers funded and self-funded residencies throughout the year. They welcome schools, community groups and art-lovers to visit their beautiful walled garden and restored glasshouses on the Marchmont Estate, and host regular open studios.
Hugo developed a series of outbuildings surrounding a courtyard on the Estate, converting them into a selection of workshops and studios providing high quality, affordable spaces for artists and craft makers, which is also now home to the Hugo Burge Foundation. All of the studios have shared access to a common room, kitchen, and meeting space, where the community of makers can come together, share ideas, and socialise. Permanent tenants in February will include chairmakers Sam Cooper and Richard Platt, the Marchmont Silversmithing Workshop, and Redbraes Pottery.
